Walgreens launches its inaugural Global Capability Centre in Chennai, creating hundreds of technology and operations jobs.
American pharmacy giant Walgreens India Private Ltd has finalised an agreement to establish its first Global Capability Centre in Chennai. This significant move follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
The new facility will be located within the DLF Downtown Taramani complex. This area sits along the state government’s newly designated Old Mahabalipuram Road GCC corridor. Consequently, the project highlights the growing importance of this specific real estate zone.
During its first year of operation, the centre expects to create over 250 high-value technology and operational roles. Furthermore, the company plans for subsequent expansion in various phases. This development marks a major milestone for the healthcare and pharmacy services network.
State Industries Minister S Keerthana expressed strong support for the partnership on social media. She noted that the investment serves as a clear vote of confidence in Tamil Nadu’s digital ecosystem. Moreover, she emphasised that the state possesses an extensive and capable talent pool.
The Minister also stated that Walgreens will develop critical business and technology capabilities from this hub. Such partnerships reinforce Chennai’s position as a premier destination for global firms. Therefore, the city continues to attract international companies looking to innovate and scale.
Chief Minister Vijay reviewed the progress with officials from the Industries Department shortly after his official trip to the United Kingdom. He established clear timelines to ensure all investment commitments are fully realised on the ground. Additionally, he monitored welfare initiatives alongside these industrial developments.
The government confirmed that the Walgreens hub will focus specifically on technology and business services. Senior officials from both the government and Walgreens attended the signing ceremony. This collaborative effort aims to maintain the current momentum of industrial growth in the region.
