New extension system brings 65mm large-format imaging to professional cinematographers.
Sony introduces the RIALTO 65 Camera Extension System, upgrading the VENICE 2 to capture stunning 65mm large-format cinema imagery.
Sony introduces the RIALTO 65 Camera Extension System for the VENICE 2 CineAlta camera. As a result, filmmakers can now use a remarkable 65mm sensor. This upgrade delivers a 1.5:1 aspect ratio. The system also expands the standard VENICE 2 body to 65mm.
The new sensor measures 53.75 mm wide by 35.83 mm high. As a result, it ranks among the largest commercially available cinema image sensors today. Additionally, the imaging area is roughly 2.2 times larger than a 35mm full-frame sensor. As a result, the camera captures spatial depth and background separation beautifully.
Filmmakers naturally emphasise their main subjects using this expansive field of view. Moreover, the RIALTO 65 efficiently supports both Extension Mode and Studio Mode. As a result, crews can detach the camera head from the main body. This flexibility accommodates challenging environments like confined spaces.
This compact setup also makes handheld shooting considerably easier. The camera head weighs approximately 1.5 kg. Furthermore, its dimensions remain incredibly compact for professional film sets. As a result, operators gain greater freedom without sacrificing image quality.
The system supports an impressive 9.6K 1.5:1 Open Gate readout. As a result, directors can frame flexibly across the wide sensor area. Additionally, a 9.6K 2.20:1 readout mode accommodates a wider range of cinema lenses. Future software updates will eventually introduce even more readout modes.
Cinematographers can select a Base ISO of either 2500 or 10000. Specifically, at Base ISO 2500, the camera delivers over 15 stops of latitude. As a result, the system reproduces rich gradations from highlights to shadows. As a result, creators maintain strict control in high-contrast lighting environments.
Detaching the camera head requires a robust cable connection. As a result, Sony designed the connecting cable for easy handling on set. Additionally, crews can completely detach the cable at both ends. This subsequently simplifies equipment integration during demanding production schedules.
Buyers can choose between 4.5-metre and 12-metre cable options. As a result, teams can adapt quickly to complex shooting environments. Furthermore, operators capture essential camera tilt and roll data as metadata. Editors then use this information in complex post-production workflows.
The VENICE 2 platform retains its renowned CineAlta colour science. Specifically, it delivers natural colour reproduction and smooth skin-tone gradations. Additionally, the system balances immense image quality with efficient X-OCN data operation. As a result, file management remains streamlined despite the massive resolution.
Users seamlessly retain their existing AXS memory cards. As a result, upgrading to the 65mm format avoids overhauling production media. Moreover, the RIALTO 65 notably omits a fixed lens mount. As a result, creators attach third-party lens adapters suited to their specific production needs.
Filmmakers easily integrate dedicated 65mm format lenses. Smart lens adapters also record focal length and aperture values as metadata. Editors therefore use this crucial data for VFX and virtual production. Anamorphic shooters also benefit from multiple de-squeeze display ratios.
The package includes 11 drop-in ND filters featuring electronic contacts. Specifically, the VENICE 2 body automatically recognises the inserted filter’s density. As a result, operators can adjust exposure settings with minimal delay. Professional filmmakers can now elevate their visual storytelling immensely.
