New partnership with SES brings ground-speed internet to 18 Embraer aircraft.

Finnair and SES partner to bring ground-like internet speeds to the skies by 2027.

Finnair plans to transform the passenger experience with a new satellite-technology deal. The carrier will install advanced connectivity systems on 18 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft. As a result, travellers can expect internet speeds comparable to those on the ground.

This upgrade utilises a multi-orbit network from industry leader SES. The system combines geostationary satellite capacity with low-earth-orbit technology. SES also collaborates with Eutelsat to deliver seamless coverage.

Engineers will fit the planes with specialised electronically steered array antennas. The hardware ensures reliable signals throughout the flight path. The first upgraded aircraft will likely enter commercial service during 2027.

This initiative supports the airline’s goal of providing better connectivity for all flyers. Blane Boynton of SES noted that multi-orbit networks offer essential performance and growth. He believes the agreement shows growing airline confidence in the technology.

Similarly, Simon Large from Finnair expressed excitement about bringing broadband to customers. He emphasised that connectivity remains vital to modern travel. Eutelsat representative Thierry Polycarpe highlighted the benefits of their low-latency network.

Crucially, the LEO constellation supports real-time applications passengers often need. This partnership represents a significant step for European aviation technology. Airlines are increasingly adopting these resilient systems to meet rising digital demands.
