New sister-airport agreement targets growth in the Canada-India supply chain and digital innovation.
Vancouver and Bengaluru airports have signed a strategic pact to enhance global cargo logistics and technology exchange.
Global supply chains are witnessing a major strategic shift towards technological integration. International logistics hubs are increasingly prioritising digital innovation. Consequently, Vancouver International Airport and Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru recently formed a strategic alliance.
This new sister-airport agreement is designed to enhance economic connectivity. Specifically, the partnership aims to strengthen the burgeoning technology trade corridor between Canada and Southern India. Both regions host rapidly expanding digital ecosystems.
Officials signed a memorandum of understanding on October 16 at the Bengaluru terminal. Canada’s Minister of International Trade attended the significant event alongside senior airport representatives. Additionally, the comprehensive pact outlines seven distinct areas for mutual development.
Increasing cargo volumes remains a primary objective for both gateways. Vancouver managed a record 365,000 tonnes during 2025. The Canadian hub expects further double-digit cargo growth throughout 2026. Moreover, officials plan to double total air freight capacity within five years.
Bengaluru processed an impressive 532,000 tonnes last year. This facility already stands as India’s leading gateway for perishable exports. Together, these dynamic transport hubs handle immense volumes of international trade. Therefore, both gateways are now laying vital groundwork for potential direct flights.
Minister Maninder Sidhu indicated that these evolving trade corridors are delivering tangible results. He emphasised that this strategic agreement promotes bilateral investment and strengthens societal bonds. Ultimately, the partnership supports broader efforts to diversify Canadian trade relationships globally.
Bilateral trade between Canada and India exceeded $10.9 billion in 2025. Both national governments intend to significantly expand this economic exchange. British Columbia currently houses nearly 500,000 individuals of Indian descent. Meanwhile, Bengaluru’s thriving tech sector maintains strong business ties with Western Canada.
Experts view this agreement as a crucial preliminary step towards direct aerial connectivity. Jeff Nankivell from the Asia Pacific Foundation noted the massive combined passenger and cargo metrics. Furthermore, airport technology leaders highlighted the critical need for comprehensive collaboration across the aviation sector.
Technological advancement forms another cornerstone of this international pact. The teams will collaboratively explore Vancouver’s Digital Twin infrastructure. Bengaluru’s operational leadership confirmed plans to develop next-generation digital platforms together. Consequently, they will share vital models concerning sustainable operations and process optimisation.
Business council leaders believe this innovation link will unlock unprecedented economic opportunities. On the passenger front, both airports boast exceptional service records. Vancouver recently secured the title of Best Airport in North America for a fifteenth year. Similarly, Bengaluru’s Terminal 2 maintains an exclusive Skytrax 5-Star rating.
