Port authorities select Amaravila as a site for a warehousing hub to avoid residential displacement.
Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd moves its logistics park to Amaravila following local protests.
Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd has shifted focus to a new 20-acre site near Amaravila. This move follows significant local opposition at the previous Udiyankulangara location. Residents there feared the displacement of hundreds of families from their homes. Consequently, officials sought a more suitable area with lower population density.
The new location sits further south & aligns with essential logistical requirements. Its proximity to the railway line is vital for the Central Warehousing Corporation. This facility will manage the vast cargo movement generated by the Vizhinjam port. Therefore, the strategic shift ensures that infrastructure development remains on track despite earlier setbacks.
Previously, an action council & local political units led a vigorous protest against the initial plans. They highlighted that nearly 500 houses occupied the original project area. Under this pressure, VISL coordinators decided to explore alternatives to avoid social disruption. A senior project official noted that the search for the new site became necessary after these protests.
The Amaravila site provides a balance between operational needs & social responsibility. It serves as a key component of the broader logistics network in the Vizhinjam hinterland. This project will eventually streamline storage & handling for international trade. Thus, the government aims to complete the acquisition without further conflict with the community.
