New microbiome therapy shows promise for treating severe skin cancer.
Preliminary data from the PICASSO trial show that microbiome treatments can be safely integrated into metastatic melanoma therapy.
Microbiome treatments are reshaping modern oncology. As a result, clinical evaluations are testing novel combinations for severe cancers. A recent trial assessed a new therapy for metastatic melanoma.
The study evaluated MaaT013 alongside standard immune checkpoint inhibitors. Researchers administered this combination to patients with treatment-naïve disease. The PICASSO trial successfully met its primary safety objectives.
The trial investigators observed no severe safety differences between groups. Therefore, the treatment appears feasible for patients facing solid tumours. The safety profile matched expectations for this specific immunotherapy combination.
Additionally, clinical response rates remained consistent with previously established benchmarks. The trial included 69 patients across five French centres. Researchers carefully randomised these participants into treatment and placebo groups.
They also generated detailed metagenomic profiles for each participant. Exploratory analyses showed baseline microbiome composition might influence clinical responses. Thus, initial biological makeup could determine the overall treatment efficacy.
Patients receiving the therapy showed significant increases in microbiome diversity. This outcome clearly confirms the treatment’s biological activity. However, these preliminary findings rely entirely on the data disclosed so far.
The company will present full scientific analyses at a future medical congress. MaaT Pharma leadership noted the importance of these controlled data. The chief executive said the findings offer valuable insights.
The results highlight the critical nature of proper patient selection. As a result, this information will guide future immuno-oncology development strategies. The French National Cancer Institute fully funded this project.
Ultimately, microbiome research continues to offer new avenues for oncology.
