Inflation and severe weather prompt a credit rating drop for the New Jersey insurer.
AM Best has lowered the credit ratings of Farmers Insurance Company of Flemington amid rising economic pressures.
Regional insurers face mounting pressures from erratic climate events. As a result, smaller providers often struggle to stay financially sound. AM Best recently downgraded Farmers Insurance Company of Flemington. The New Jersey firm saw a noticeable drop in its credit rating.
The agency lowered the firm’s Financial Strength Rating. It fell from an excellent mark to a good rating. Furthermore, the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating also declined significantly. However, the financial strength outlook improved slightly to stable.
This downgrade stems largely from marginal operating performance. Underwriting results have been highly volatile over the past several years. Unpredictable weather severely impacted the regional insurance market. Additionally, inflationary pressures heavily burdened the enterprise.
Rising reinsurance costs created another major hurdle for the insurer. The firm recently attempted to implement several profitability initiatives. Unfortunately, prolonged regulatory reviews delayed these necessary operational updates. As a result, operating metrics weakened considerably.
Despite these setbacks, the company retains a very strong balance sheet. Risk-adjusted capitalisation remains at the highest possible tier. The insurer also maintains robust liquidity alongside strong reinsurance protections. Therefore, they possess adequate resources to navigate current challenges.
Policyholder surplus has steadily declined since the start of 2022. This ongoing drop continues to pressure key financial metrics. Management implemented several corrective actions to stabilise this crucial surplus. Nevertheless, the ultimate effectiveness of these initiatives remains entirely uncertain.
The company operates solely in New Jersey. This limited geographic profile exposes it to localised weather events. Moreover, significant legislative pressures complicate their daily business operations. AM Best still considers their enterprise risk management completely appropriate.
