WhatsApp is launching a major identity overhaul by introducing optional usernames for its global user base. This change allows individuals to connect without sharing private mobile numbers. Consequently, the platform aims to bolster user privacy across its vast digital ecosystem.
However, prominent entrepreneurs and creators in India fear this update could trigger a wave of sophisticated scams. They argue that fraudsters might register handles deceptively similar to famous personalities. Therefore, unsuspecting users could face increased risks of financial fraud and identity theft.
Ankur Warikoo warned that the feature might become a disaster without robust anti-abuse systems. He suggested that removing phone numbers eliminates a vital layer of verification for many people. Similarly, Vijay Shekhar Sharma expressed concerns about the confusion between verified and unverified accounts.
Meta intends to mitigate these risks by reserving handles for public figures and organisations. Furthermore, the company will require a four-digit PIN before anyone initiates a chat via a username. This extra step aims to reduce spam and unauthorised contact attempts.
Some experts view the shift as a necessary privacy improvement. Additionally, Sandeep Mall noted that hiding numbers protects professionals when they interact with strangers. Rajeev Mantri believes the move strengthens Meta’s cross-platform data integration and advertising capabilities.
