APRA grants Revolut a full deposit-taking licence to launch an aggressive AUD $400 million expansion down under.

Global fintech Revolut secures an Australian banking licence to aggressively expand its local financial services.

The Australian banking sector faces renewed competition as global financial technology firms enter the regulated space. Recently, regulators approved a major shift in the local market. The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority granted a full banking licence to Revolut. As a result, the global fintech giant officially operates as Revolut Bank Australia today.

This significant milestone marks the company’s first Asia-Pacific banking entity. The firm has committed nearly AUD $400 million over five years, funding that will support local product innovation and workforce expansion. In addition, the move challenges traditional Australian banks on their home turf.

Existing retail and business clients transitioned to the new regulated structure immediately, with no manual intervention required from current account holders. Meanwhile, new users can now join the locally regulated financial institution directly. As a result, consumer confidence receives a substantial boost through formal regulatory oversight.

The Financial Claims Scheme now formally protects these eligible deposits. Specifically, this government guarantee covers funds up to AUD $250,000 per account holder. Consequently, the fintech now operates on equal footing with established domestic lenders. This regulatory approval highlights the robustness of the company’s operational model.

Company founder Nik Storonsky noted that this launch fulfils a long-term strategic priority. He views the achievement as a crucial step toward building a truly global bank. He also emphasised that securing approval in a highly regulated market demonstrates the team’s capability. Ultimately, overcoming strict regulatory hurdles validates the company’s global expansion strategy.

Local chief executive Matt Baxby described the licence as a launchpad for future growth. The institution plans to introduce a broader suite of financial products soon. He indicated that new savings and credit facilities will join their existing daily services. Overall, the firm aims to deliver a secure and seamless consumer banking experience.
