The massive project in Jamnagar signals India’s growing role in the global computing race.

Meta and Reliance Industries partner to construct a major AI-enabled data centre in Gujarat’s Jamnagar.

India is rapidly becoming a central player in the global artificial intelligence race. Consequently, Meta has recently partnered with Reliance Industries to establish its first AI-enabled data centre here. This massive facility sits in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

Furthermore, it will boast a significant capacity of 168 megawatts. Reliance plans to deliver this project within two years. Meta will lease the entire capacity to support its growing computing requirements.

Additionally, the social media giant retains an option to expand the facility in the future. Reliance will manage the entire lifecycle, including design and utility management. This move strengthens the strategic bond between the two corporate giants.

However, they had already formed a joint venture to develop enterprise AI solutions previously. That venture involved an initial investment of 855 crore rupees. Reliance holds a seventy per cent stake in that specific project.

Indeed, the chairman of Reliance described this as a transformative moment for digital infrastructure. Similarly, the founder of Meta noted that the facility will scale their global infrastructure. The partners chose Jamnagar for its excellent access to renewable energy.

Therefore, the facility will use desalinated seawater for its cooling systems. Meta intends to cover the full costs for energy and water consumption.

Moreover, this investment aligns with a broader plan to build massive global capacity. Meta recently increased its capital expenditure projections significantly. India represents the largest market for the company’s family of apps.

As a result, high-quality connectivity in the region remains a top priority. Other technology firms are also making huge moves in the Indian market. For instance, Google has committed to a large-scale AI hub in Visakhapatnam.

Furthermore, OpenAI has partnered with the Tata Group for local data residency. Microsoft and Amazon have unveiled multi-billion-dollar investment plans as well. India is clearly positioning itself as a global digital infrastructure hub.
