The Union government reorganises the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs into two distinct departments.
The Union government has split the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs into two departments. This move follows a formal gazette notification from the Cabinet Secretariat. Consequently, the ministry now comprises the Department of Capital Development and the Department of Urban Development.
The Department of Capital Development focuses specifically on the national capital region. It oversees the Central Public Works Department and the Delhi Development Authority. Furthermore, this department manages the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and various Union government buildings.
It also handles land acquisition and development within the National Capital Territory. Therefore, the new structure ensures a dedicated focus on infrastructure in Delhi and its surroundings. These changes came into effect immediately following the official announcement.
Meanwhile, the Department of Urban Development handles national policy implementation. It frames guidelines for housing, sanitation, and urban transport across the country. Additionally, it manages climate adaptation strategies for various metropolitan areas.
This department oversees several flagship schemes, including the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation. It also supervises the Swachh Bharat Mission and the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban. Consequently, it remains the primary body for large-scale national urban projects.
Regulatory oversight also falls under this specific department. It administers the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, commonly known as RERA. Moreover, it protects the livelihoods of street vendors through relevant national legislation.
A separate amendment has shifted certain administrative duties elsewhere. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting now manages stationery and official government publications. This decision aims to streamline operations across different central departments.
