Antarctic luxury travel adopts sustainable aviation fuel made from recycled cooking oil for eco-conscious expeditions.
Luxury travel to Antarctica is undergoing a sustainable transformation this season. White Desert plans to use sustainable aviation fuel for its upcoming flights. This eco-friendly alternative consists partly of recycled cooking oil.
Sasol produces this speciality fuel at its Natref refinery in South Africa. The inaugural flight will depart from Cape Town this November. An Airbus A340-600 will carry passengers to the icy continent.
Consequently, the operator hopes to reduce the carbon impact of these activities. Antarctic tourism is growing rapidly despite the region’s extreme environmental sensitivity. Therefore, pressure is mounting on companies to adopt greener technologies.
Traditional jet fuel remains the industry standard for most global transport. However, sustainable fuel offers a viable path toward lower overall emissions. White Desert previously imported its sustainable fuel supplies from European sources.
The company switched to local supply after Sasol received the necessary certification. Prices for these exclusive polar expeditions remain at a premium level. A single-day trip costs approximately USD 16,500 for interested travellers.
Seven-day journeys can cost as much as USD 120,000. Guests enjoy glacier excursions and gatherings in a unique ice bar. Sasol aims to expand its annual production significantly by 2030.
Currently, the company produces 2 million litres of this alternative fuel. Future targets suggest a rise to 100 million litres within four years. This shift represents a practical commercial step for the energy giant.
However, sustainable fuel costs considerably more than conventional options. Global demand for such alternatives currently accounts for less than 1%.
